THIS SUBMISSION WINDOW IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU TO EVERY WONDERFULLY TALENTED ARTIST WHO SENT US THEIR WORK. WE WILL BE ISSUING RESPONSES THE FIRST WEEK OF NOVEMBER.

FIYAH is looking to pay an artist to design the cover for our inaugural issue!

We are a Black speculative fiction magazine publishing quarterly, which means there will be four different submission periods. This one will close November 1st, 2016 for the issue releasing January 1st, 2017.

The issue theme is REBIRTH. So send us your phoenix, your zombies, your flowers bursting through cracks in a scene of dystopian destruction. We encourage you to check out other SFF zines for inspiration. Variable guidelines will be provided for each issue as needed, but we will need the following consistently:

  • Art layout should fit an 8”x11” portrait orientation without distortion.
  • Art should reflect the issue’s designated theme.
  • The artist should be comfortable and experienced in the illustration of Black characters and culture.
  • The artist should be familiar with FIYAH’s mission.

Inquiries should include your name, Twitter handle if you’ve got it, a short bio, the piece you intend to submit and a link to your portfolio. These things should be gathered neatly in an email and sent to art@fiyahlitmag.com.

The artist behind the selected piece will be paid $150. This is not a pro rate. We know and we’re working on growing so we can afford to pay more. We want you to eat, and encourage you to pursue any and all better offers if you’ve got them. We’ll still be here cheering you on.

We will request non-exclusive rights to the work and will accept existing artwork as well as new pieces so you can continue to make money off it in other ways. If you are submitting artwork from your back catalog, it should not have appeared in any similar publication format in the six months prior to our use, and we’d appreciate it if you didn’t submit work that has ever been used as the cover of another magazine.

Thanks so much for your interest. We’re excited to see what you’ve got.
